Adopt a Tank of Mice!!

Filed under: CSUN animals — admin @ 3:30 pm

Adoptions are still going well, with almost 100 animals finding permanent, loving homes thus far! There are many still to go and, having unexpectedly received many pregnant females, we are up to our eyeballs in mice! So, PLEASE consider adding a lovely aquarium full of mice (or even 1 little boy who refuses to get along with his brothers) to your home.

Here are the top 5 reasons you should do so (courtesy of NLAS Board Member Jane Garrison):

1. If you adopt a tank, it makes room for more animals to be saved from animal testing.
2. They are SO EASY to care for! You just put them in a tank with food, water, bedding and an exercise wheel and they are so happy!
3. They are SO MUCH fun to watch….
4. You will be giving an animal used in a lab peace for the first time in their life!
5. You can help empty my garage!!!! I still have over 150 animals in my garage.

Please fill out the adoption application at: newlifeanimalsanctuary.org/adoption.html

CSUN Critter Adoptions

Filed under: CSUN animals — admin @ 5:57 am

Following last week’s rescue of over 250 animals from CSUN’s closing psych. lab, we are very pleased at the enthusiastic response we are getting to our call to adopt these lucky little critters! Last weekend we saw our first adoptions to wonderful, loving homes of 7 rats, 40 mice and 14 hamsters. We have homes for 3 more rats, 10 hamsters and 2 guinea pigs, pending neutering of rats, and scheduling pick-up/drop-off.

If you’re interested in providing tender loving care for the rest of the life of a group of animals from a lab, the available groups will be posted at the end of this message. Please fill out the application at: newlifeanimalsanctuary.org/adoption.html and indicate the group(s) you are interested in.  We have literally seen people moved to tears at the prospect of giving these critters the life they deserve. What a rewarding way to make a contribution to the plight of animals in labs!

Many thanks to our first adopters: Mick Mars, Chandra Greco, Kim Zoerb, Nina Markert, Debbie La Torre,  Thao Grass, Andrea Montes and Jess!

In other news, a few of the mice we received from CSUN were pregnant and we’ve had at least 2 new litters of new babies! Here’s a few photos from our adoptions, babies, etc.:

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!! 250+ Animals Rescued from CSUN Lab!

Filed under: CSUN animals — admin @ 7:09 pm

New Life Animal Sanctuary rescued over 250 animals from Cal State University’s closing Psych Lab Tuesday! 20 rats, 4 guinea pigs, almost 60 hamsters and about 150 mice (4 litters of babies that we were unable to count) waited patiently as our crew packed the animals into carriers and made sure no one was left behind (including 3 newborn mice who had been fed to geckos but were still alive).

How amazing it was to see these beautiful critters see daylight for the first time and, once back at our holding location, to see them run on wheels for the first time (some ran for HOURS on end!), get fresh produce and treats for the first time, have boxes and places to hide, burrow and build dens for the first time! Truly a heartwarming sight!

If you have an adoption application pending or have otherwise sent an e-mail and haven’t heard back from us, we sincerely apologize. Pulling this together was A LOT of work and there’s only a few of us spending all hours to get ready for our new “clients.” Please bare with us - we will get back to everyone, follow up on all the adoption applications and arrange for pick-up of your new friends shortly! If you are interested in adopting and haven’t already, please fill out the adoption application on-line at: newlifeanimalsanctuary.org/adoption.html

These very lucky 250 have been given a NEW LIFE, where they will have all the comforts a critter could want and never be subjected to experimentation again! We especially want to thank the following individuals and organizations for their invaluable contributions to this project’s success: Jane & Mark Garrison, Shannon Keith, Pia Salk, Sue Paul, Debra Mendelsohn and Bay Area Rats (bayarearats@aol.com), Diane Nesom, United Pet Food, The Bunny Bunch (bunnybunch.org), Suzanne Blanding, Donna Hardy and Judi Friedman.

Also, FYI, we are expecting to receive a group of rats from a lab in Pennsylvania. There are 70 total and the local group there is trying to find homes for as many as possible but we have agreed to take whatever they can’t place. And there are 2 groups of dogs that we are working towards finding information and helping to find homes for so will keep you posted on that as well.

A few pictures of Tuesday’s rescue are attached below and there will be many more to follow.

Super Tuesday

Filed under: CSUN animals — admin @ 4:47 am

We are scheduled to pick our new “clients” up from CSUN on Tuesday, May 27!  Thank you SO SO MUCH to everyone who has helped us pull this together with donations of cages, food, supplies and funds!  Over 200 animals will be getting a New Life after the lab thanks to your generosity!

We seem to have just about everything we need now but still short on transport carriers so, if you have any small animal carriers that you can donate or even loan, please contact: gina@newlifeanimalsanctuary.org

If you’re interested in adopting guinea pigs, rats, hamsters and/or mice, please fill out our adoption application at newlifeanimalsanctuary.org/adoption.html or, if you’re in the San Francisco Bay Area, please contact Debra Mendelsohn directly at: BayAreaRats@aol.com

Many, Many Thanks, For the Animals!

CSUN Animals Still Need Your Help!!

Filed under: CSUN animals — admin @ 5:53 am

We expect to receive over 200 small animals from Cal State University Northridge’s closing psych lab this week but we still need your help!

We’ve been working hard, collecting cages and supplies, etc. and are still a little short of what we need to accommodate all the animals. The lab could call any day for us to come pick them up and we need to be ready!

What we Still Need:

* water bottles
* food bowls (small, ceramic)
* large cages or aquariums for colonies of mice, dwarf hamsters
* litter, bedding (carefresh or other non-toxic please)
* mouse & rat food
* small cardboard boxes (kleenex, cereal, etc.), toilet paper and paper towel rolls

If you can donate any of the above items, please e-mail the contact closest to you:

South Bay - Jane@JaneGarrison.com
Orange County/Inland Empire - gina@newlifeanimalsanctuary.org
San Fernando Valley - billy@zerobpm.com

We also still need permanent homes for rats, mice, syrian hamsters and dwarf hamsters. Adoption application can be found on-line at: newlifeanimalsanctuary.org/adoption.html or e-mail adopt@newlifeanimalsanctuary.org

Right on the heals of this rescue, we have a batch of rats coming from a lab in Pennsylvania! There are over 70 total being released and the local group there (The Humane League of Philadelphia) will secure homes for as many as they can and send the rest our way.

Obviously, all of this takes money and we are brand new, not quite ready to take this on, so financial contributions are most helpful in ensuring the best life for these lucky critters who are being given a New Life! If you prefer, consider sending a gift card from Centinela Feed (http://www.centinelafeed.net/StoreLocations.htm) that we can use to buy supplies.

Filed under: CSUN animals — admin @ 4:50 pm

We got the actual count of animals from CSUN today - there’s over 200!  Turns out some of the original estimates were low AND some of the mice had babies over the weekend.  Please fill out our adoption application on-line now if you are able to provide a home or foster some of these animals:

20 rats
59 hamsters
4 guinea pigs
131 mice (some hairless)

We also still need:

food (for above animals)
litter/bedding (carefresh or other non-toxic please)
toys, food bowls, water bottles, etc.
cages/carriers (can be returned if necessary)
small boxes (i.e. cereal, kleenex, etc.) and paper towel or toilet paper rolls

Donations can be dropped off at locations in Orange County, South Bay, San Fernando Valley or Inland Empire. E-mail gina@newlifeanimalsanctuary.org for details. And we still need help transporting large cages - if you have a truck and can help, please contact Gina ASAP: 310.980.3947

Happy Ending for CSUN Lab Animals

Filed under: CSUN animals — admin @ 10:18 pm

New Life Animal Sanctuary to Adopt CSUN Animals!

Many people have heard during the past week about the psych. lab at Cal State University Northridge closing and their wanting to re-home the animals rather than euthanizing them.  The folks there do seem to be very caring and want nothing more than to see these animals have peace and joy for the rest of their lives.  We immediately offered to adopt all of the animals from the CSUN lab but had some legal obstacles to overcome with regards to technical “ownership” of the animals and what the research protocols would allow for.

We received the wonderful news yesterday morning that they have obtained the necessary approval to release all of the animals to our care but it has NOT happened yet.  There’s still some paperwork and documentation to handle on their end and we need to be sure we’re prepared on our end to accommodate these animals.  If all goes well, we hope to have the animals (rats, mice, guinea pigs and hamsters - altogether totaling around 100) in our care as soon as possible but potentially up to 6 weeks from now.

In the meantime, we ask that people please not contact the school as they have been overwhelmed with calls and e-mails from the animal community.  They are pleased that people are concerned but let’s let them handle the business that will get the animals released sooner rather than bogging them down with having to answer to all of us.  We are confident that they are really trying to do right by these animals and are willing to avoid euthanasia at almost any cost.

If you would like to help with this effort, please consider donating any of the following items:

* cages/carriers (these can be returned if necessary)

* food (for rats, mice, guinea pigs and hamsters)

* litter, bedding (carefresh or other non-toxic please)

* toys, food bowls, water bottles, etc.

Items can be dropped off at locations in Orange County, South Bay, San Fernando Valley or Inland Empire.  E-mail gina@newlifeanimalsanctuary.org or check back later for details and also if you’re interested in adopting or fostering some of these animals.  We will post the adoption application soon and everyone will be screened to insure proper care for all of these animals.

You can also donate to this and future rescues by sending checks to:

New Life Animal Sanctuary

PO Box 6174

Anaheim, CA  92816

or via PayPal (gina@newlifeanimalsanctuary.org)

We are trying to set up an account with a local feed store if you’d like to donate by credit card directly towards the purchase of supplies needed for the animals.

We also need some help transporting cages so if you are local, have a truck and can help, please let us know!

Thanks SO MUCH to everyone who has already taken action and offered help, and in advance to those who will!  Special thanks to Cari Daly and The Bunny Bunch (http://www.bunnybunch.org/) for bringing the situation to light, invaluable information, cage donations and help with adoptions.  Together we will find a happy ending for CSUN’s animals and many more to come!!

From Labs to Love,

New Life Animal Sanctuary
